Absence Guidelines
Cassopolis Public Schools follows the guidelines put forth by the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for determining when students need to stay home from school.
When to Keep Your Child Home
Severe Illness: If your child is very tired, less responsive, has trouble breathing, or develops a rapidly spreading rash.
Fever: If your child has a temperature of 100.4°F or higher, keep them home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
Diarrhea: If your child has two or more loose or watery stools, they should stay home until they have had no diarrhea for 24 hours.
Vomiting: If your child has vomited two or more times, keep them home until they have not vomited for 24 hours.
Rash or Skin Sores: If your child has a rash with a fever or has sores that are leaking fluid and cannot be covered, keep them home until the rash is gone or a healthcare provider says it’s not contagious.
Respiratory Symptoms: If your child has a cough that disrupts normal activity.
Pain: If your child has pain that disrupts their normal activity whether from an earache, headache, sore throat, or injury.
Certain Diagnosed Communicable Diseases: If your child is diagnosed with a specific contagious disease (like COVID-19, chickenpox, influenza, norovirus, etc.), follow the school or health department’s exclusion guidelines.
Note:
- Children should also stay home if they are too sick to participate comfortably in school activities.
- For some illnesses, a doctor’s note or medical clearance may be required before returning.
- If you are unsure, contact your school nurse or local health department for advice.
